I recently installed Service Pack 2 on my computer. Most recently, I had tried to open a media file that I guess would normally be used by Windows Media Player (wmplayer.exe). I don't generally like to use that program, but the simpler version of mplayer2.exe. This particular file type though was 'tied' to wmplayer.exe.
To avoid situations like this one in the future and be able to play any file you want without any hassle, then it would be a good idea to install a codec pack for Windows' embedded player. 321 Media Player For Windows Xp Service Pack 2 Free
Well, when I had clicked the file, instead of Windows Media Player (wmplayer.exe) playing the file, it brought up a dialog box/setup window for Windows Media Player 9 Series (setup_wm.exe). I do not want to run setup for version 9, and if certain file types are tied to wmplayer.exe, I would really like my system to use the version that came with Windows, being version 7. I have not personally installed any newer version of Windows Media Player, now or prior to my Service Pack update. I would suppose that version 9 automatically comes as part of service pack 2. Is it possible though to continue using a version less than 9, in service pack 2? I have considered completing this setup routine (setup_wm.exe) and then uninstalling version 9, but I recall having problems when I inadvertently upgraded version 7 to 9 or higher, and was unable to downgrade at one point. I looked on Google how to uninstall verion 9, and it seems to be a very difficult process, and one that may not work by simply just using the Add/Remove Programs applet. I don't want to upgrade my media player to version 9, but simply be able to click on file types that use wmplayer.exe, and have the media file play normally; than having to run mplayer2 manually, and drag-dropping said media file. Please help, thanks.
